Writing to a Legislator
The Legislator Needs YOUR HelpWith hundreds of separate pieces of legislation to consider every year, legislators in Columbus need the opinion, advice, and specialized knowledge of their constituents to guide them. It is impossible for any legislator to have detailed knowledge of the technicalities of every bill which he or she must consider. This means that even if you oppose the bill, legislators welcome your letters because you are providing them with knowledge they need to make decisions.
How To Write To Your Legislator
Every legislator considers a large number of bills on a wide range of subjects. Therefore, the first essential ingredient of an effective letter to a legislator is a specific reference to the particular bill which interests you. The second important element is a brief description of the bill's provisions and an explanation of the effect of these provisions will have on you. The third element of an effective letter is your advice to your legislator as to how you think he or she should vote on the bill.
For best results, type your letter, using white paper or stationery with your company letterhead. Be clear, concise and courteous. Deal with only one issue in each letter. Back up your opinion with hard facts and a well-reasoned argument. Write a follow-up letter if you receive no reply within three weeks. If a crucial vote is approaching, make a follow-up phone call.
